Why don’t we just say out loud everything we’re analyzing about people? For one, a lot of that processing happens unconsciously. And even when I am aware of it, if I pointed out every observation in real time, there wouldn’t be a conversation left—it would just be constant commentary. When I’m talking to someone, it feels like I’m running three conversations at once: the actual exchange with them, an internal breakdown of what I just noticed, and a quiet question in the background—are they picking up on the fact that I’m analyzing them? This might also explain why things like love bombing are effective on neurodivergent people.I don’t assume someone likes me unless they clearly say it or show it in an obvious, above-and-beyond way. Being nice isn’t a signal I read into much, because I treat kindness as my baseline—it’s not something I use strategically, so I don’t automatically interpret it that way from others either. Extra insight- I’ve been aware of this quality for years, but only recently started to understand the “why” behind it. When I meet couples, I instinctively assess which partner might feel threatened by me first.
