Exactly what I was thinking! I’m 75% Korean & 25% black. I was born and lived in Korea for a bit before moving to the US. I also have a half Korean & half white cousin born in the US. Guess which one of us is accepted by our Korean peers? 🙂 even looking at media and entertainment, wasians get to be celebrities in Asia. You see wasians being their country’s representative at Miss Universe contests in SE Asia. You see wasians playing the role of monoracial Asians in the US. And in Korea, you’ll see other NON-Korean wasians in Kpop before any black + Korean mixes. I think the point of contention for me is that wasians will ONLY complain about their issues TO Asians/non-white mixed Asians and not their white counterparts.

hello! this is really fascinating to hear as a japanese-white mix who has very similar circumstances (speaks the language, went to Japan most summers as a kid, still go back every few years, etc) who wasn't accepted either. maybe it was the region of Japan I lived in, but I got bullied HARD for not being fully Japanese and in the US for being the only Asian kid for miles. My brother, on the other hand, was much more readily accepted into Japanese society despite having worse Japanese because he was more Japanese passing. the funny thing is, I ended up being very in touch with my Japanese culture while my brother dove in the opposite direction. I dont really have a solid take or point to accompany this essay of a comment, I just found it interesting and thought you might find it interesting as well

You don’t look black at all to me. See I always thought about myself I’m the only one who doesn’t look Japanese at all. To me you look Japanese. I grew up in Japan, too and it was very tough. I live in US now. Still a lot of people don’t believe I’m half Japanese. But I identify myself as Japanese more than black. Because I grew up there. My black side (Kenyan) I’m still learning. I don’t know if anyone understands this but I’m a Japanese woman inside even I don’t look like one.

Try being Indo-Caribbean and Afro-Caribbean. Caribbean culture and my Afro-Caribbean side have always accepted me, especially in places like Trinidad and Tobago where mixed identities are common. The issue is that some people in Indian or South Asian communities do not fully accept Indo-Caribbean people, especially those of Afro and Indo mix, because they see us as “too Black” or not “Indian enough.” A lot of us grow up proud of both sides of our identity while still dealing with rejection from people who do not understand Caribbean history and culture.

Girl you definitely look mixed. I would have thought maybe you are a darker Asian at first, but your hair texture tells me that you are mixed.

As a mixed person myself, you look mixed to me. Also, very beautiful. We don’t talk enough about the colorism within the Asian community and the internalized racism that exists.

I understand stand you a lot because I’m Somali and I was born and raised in America and when I moved to a predominantly Somali neighborhood in Kenya they didn’t accept me because I wasn’t “Somali enough”.

So many mixed ppl have “aunts we don’t talk to” 🥲. Thank you for your contribution to this 🫶🏼 I’ve been seeing wayyy too many monoracial people weighing in lately so it’s nice to see another mixed person offering her experience

This is such an important perspective thank you for sharing! Also it makes me so mad that Japanese people said you didn't look Japanese at all. As a Japanese Wasian I could immediately tell!!! I'm so sorry
