Another observation in the Qur'an (primarily in Surah Al-Kahf 18:60–82), Musa is told to travel until he reaches “the junction of the two seas” (majmaʿ al-baḥrayn), where he would meet Khidr. The ocean/sea serves several purposes: A signpost for the meeting Musa and his companion carry a fish. At the place where the fish mysteriously comes back to life and slips into the sea, that event becomes the sign that they have reached the place where Khidr is to be found. The sea is literally where the clue appears. A symbol of knowledge and mystery Many interpreters see the meeting point of the seas as symbolic: Musa, already a prophet with revealed law, is about to encounter another form of divinely granted knowledge possessed by Khidr. The sea often represents depth, hidden realities, and knowledge beyond ordinary perception. A setting for lessons about divine wisdom One of Khidr’s first actions happens on a boat at sea, he damages a ship belonging to poor sailors. Musa objects, but later learns there was hidden wisdom behind it. The maritime setting reinforces the theme that what seems harmful on the surface may conceal mercy or protection.
