@fjoz: Mourid Barghouti (July 8, 1944 – February 14, 2021) was a Palestinian poet born in the village of Deir Ghassaneh near Ramallah in the West Bank. He received his education at Ramallah Secondary School and traveled to Egypt in 1963, where he enrolled at Cairo University. He graduated from the Department of English Language and Literature in 1967, the same year that Israel occupied the West Bank and prevented Palestinians who happened to be abroad from returning. On this subject, Barghouti wrote in his acclaimed book, *I Saw Ramallah*, "I succeeded in obtaining my graduation certificate, but I failed to find a wall on which to hang it." He was only able to return to his city of Ramallah thirty years later, after moving between Arab and European exiles—an experience he chronicled in his autobiographical novel.His first collection of poems, "The Flood and Reconstruction," was published by Dar al-Awda in Beirut in 1972, and his most recent collection, "Midnight," was published by Dar Riyad al-Rayyes in Beirut in 2005. The Arab Institute for Studies and Publishing published his collected poems in 1997. In the late 1960s, he met the late Palestinian cartoonist Naji al-Ali, and their deep friendship continued until al-Ali's assassination in London in 1987.Mourid Barghouti received the Palestine Prize for Poetry in 2000. In his acceptance speech on behalf of all the winners at the Ramallah Cultural Palace, he criticized the Palestinian Authority (in the presence of its leaders) for its overt and covert political choices. Barghouti participated in numerous poetry readings and major book fairs worldwide. He also lectured on Palestinian and Arabic poetry at universities in Cairo, Fez, Oxford, Manchester, Oslo, Madrid, and elsewhere.He passed away on February 14, 2021 (corresponding to 2 Rajab 1442 AH) at the age of 76.
