@mylesaristin: Like ur pulling ppl who can’t sing can’t dance and have no visuals and turn them into “artists” which is both commendable and inauthentic #kpop #kpopindustry #prelude #katseye #industryplant

It’s because they’re idols, not artists. I don’t understand why people call them industry plants because they’re more like actors playing a role than people earnestly trying to make it big through solo talent. They’re more than just the music, they’re a brand and just as visual. I don’t think it’s affective to compare kpop to the American/western music industry and call them “industry plants” because they’re completely different things. Industry plants are a secret whereas idols are made by engaging in an industry made to sell an idea and brand. It’s like comparing apples to oranges

Its cultural. South Korea takes work very seriously and in a mechanic way, very different from United States. This does not mean K-pop idols are industry plants, it's just how South Korean culture is

You completely right as a fan myself kpop feeds into what the consumer wants and it’s strips the idols of their identities and makes them this polished version of themselves to make them more marketable

I’ve never been a big fan of kpop groups in general except for bts. And I mean you could say they technically are industry plants under the umbrella definition, back when they weren’t as famous as they are now they truly didn’t feel like that. And I feel like the same could be said about groups from poor companies who write their own music, because though you can claim they were planted in the industry, it wasn’t like they had instant success in their respective industry. Their competitors who were from big companies and had privilege didn’t make their own music, more like performers rather than artists. But idk that’s just my two cents lol. I think you’re so right in a lot of ways

While I agree i think industry plant isn’t right term because a lot of groups that are manufactured(survival show) tend ton be the best groups, think Twice, Katseye, Illit, I forget some of the boy groups and it works for them. And yea the groups are made to SELL you something just like everything is the world tho and that lowkey doesn’t bother me because I like a group a buy their merch just like any popular artist

Try out girlset, they chose their own name and concept, they write their own songs (or co-write pre-written songs), and are working on producing songs in the future. They’re very transparent with their creative input (+ designed their own logo)

It’s not even a secret. KPop has huge corporations that build these groups and their images from scratch and debut them. There are maybe a handful of acts that are formed organically and most of them are indie. The kpop groups people know are all manufactured

I felt this way for a long time to but have found myself really enjoying new gen groups or groups that are not really kpop but kpop adjacent. Like Katseye, Cortis, Santos Bravos, Girlset etc. have all grabbed my attention and I would consider myself a fan. I think companies are realizing that their old system has limits with how open western audiences will be to it so they are SLOWLY cutting those strings and being less hands on. Cortis really impressed me with how much they produce, create the visuals, choreograph etc for their music. Like with them I don’t feel that disconnect and it gives me the feel that the music actually aligns with them as artist. Same goes with girlset and then also Santos Bravos (who I just identify with since they all Latino and have an openly gay member). Katseye still has the authenticity problem but the talent and concept keeps me interested.

No shade but isn’t that just the music industry. Just like in the us artist esp mainstream who try so hard to be relatable

Even out of the people who are officially taken into a company as a trainee only like 5% actually end up getting to debut and it doesn’t mean they’ll be successful either just that they got to a stage. It’s an insane industry.
