@aveovershares: Replying to @Niki @ Life as a LEO Wife Here ya go! Part 2 of me adapting one of my old seminar papers into a (slightly less boring) historical horror deep dive #darkhistory #witchcraft #historical #horror #england
based on some of the names, it sounds like Terry Pratchett or the other one was aware of this case when writing Good Omens

My partner is from nearby Colne (interesting fact about Colne, it is the home of Wallace Hartley aka the band leader from the Titanic and his grave is there) so very familiar with the story of Pendle. The statue of Alice Nutter you showed is in the village of Roughlee, where she came from. It’s incredibly moving and often covered in flowers and ribbons.

Thank god I didn’t live during those times. I just like to learn about them, and you’re the perfect source. Thank you!

I don’t think a 9 year old child can understand the complexities of being an outcast, of fear of witches, or of a trial. She was coached.

I wonder if Jennett ever regretted her actions. Her testimony left her alone, without any family, in a very harsh world.

As someone who worked with kids k-12 for a long time, kids are extremely malleable. I could see all three suggestions for a motive being not only true, but happening all at once. Kids aren’t capable of the kind of manipulation at this scale; as children are notoriously bad liars. She was absolutely coached at bare minimum.

I’ve always thought that if somebody back then had common sense they would be like “hey if they’re really a witch, they’d be able to magically get themselves out of trouble so they must not be witches.” Because if I was a witch, I would use my powers to get out of trouble.

The book “How To Kill A Witch” about the trials in Scotland at the same time is absolutely brilliant reading covering cases like this. They were so sad.
