As a artist, if I saw the painting in the garage I would ask if they didn't like it, and when they admitted that they didn't like it the whole time, i would apologize for making them feel like they couldn't have been honest with me from the start, then I'd offer to take it off of their hands and if they'd accept it I would then sell it on ebay or Facebook. A saying that's helped me deal with rejection: "You can be the sweetest peach on the tree, and some people just don't like peaches." Everyone will have their own preference.

Nta. I’m an artist and the only people I give works to are my parents because they like and support my work. If someone hasn’t asked for a piece, don’t give it to them. Not everyone HAS to like your art even if they’re family. And it is THEIR HOUSE. They’re not obligated to put up work they’re not a fan of.

im an artist and i never gift anything bigger than A4, its really bold to assume someone likes your art enough to hang a full size artwork on a wall in their house!!! i only gift larger works if i consult them first, and then its more like a free commission

I'm a guy who gifts people I love art A LOT and the trick is, I paint / sculpt subjects I KNOW they love. cats for one person, plants for another, horrifying Lovecraftian creatures for the third. and when I have friends I don't know what to make for, I just buy them gifts! saves everyone the heartache

It is unfortunate, but this is the reality of making art. It doesn't matter if it took you long. Art is subjective and it is even more detrimental that you like it if it's supposed to be a part of interior design or something similar. My mom loves my art and made t-shirts of it for me - even *I* don't want to wear them. It's SO awkward and not built for this 😭

I don't think the amount of time it took someone to make something should count in if it's good or not. I also think saying "she was too curvy" sounds so bad. Anyway, it's ok to not like it. It's also ok to be sad about it. Making art is vulnerable. She shouldn't force them to hang it, but she is allowed to be disappointed. I don't think anyone is really an asshole.

When something is given as a gift then the giver doesn't get to decide what is done with the gift. Once it is out of your hands then it is up to the other person what they do with it. If you don't like what they did with the gift then you don't give them something as personal next time.

Decoration as a gift is wild if you don’t know their taste! She definitely does not like people in paintings so why expecting it to be hung up. I would not hang it up either if I don’t like it
