I’m a degree apprentice on one of the most competitive tech schemes out there, but I strongly agree. I think this generation is really focused on instant gratification which is why there’s been a huge shift to DA’s, combine that with a guaranteed role (usually) after, starting off at a FAANG or Tier 1 company at 18, and good pay which usually leads you to being ahead of your university peers upon graduation, and then entering management positions at 21/22, etc it seems like the perfect mixture. However, I’d say that if you go uni you have to want to go uni and do it properly in that sense, which is much more than just studying. My manager is a triple graduate from Oxbridge he, got his PhD at Cambridge and UG + MsC at Oxford, and he said similar things to what you said, the whole point of going to uni, or an ‘elite’ uni is to meet likeminded people, have ideas, build things, fail or succeed, repeat etc, you have to have that mindset of leveraging your time at uni properly and effectively in all aspects, not just studying and job opportunities as uni can offer much more than just that.
