There is a small disrespect that has been made normal. You are in the same space with someone. In a car. In the house. Standing somewhere for a catch-up. Walking slowly as a conversation begins to open its chest. Then their phone rings. Not an emergency. Not a child. Not a crisis. Just one of those loud, leisurely conversations that could have waited. Minutes pass as you become furniture in your own conversation, staring into the distance while they laugh, explain, repeat themselves, and forget you are standing there. Then the call ends.
"Sorry... where were we?" No. You cannot simply return me to the exact place you left me. Presence is not a bookmark, and neither a chair you reserve while entertaining every passing noise. Conversations have a temperature. Once they cool, they rarely return to the same warmth. There are moments when a call must be picked. Life happens. Emergencies happen. Work happens. Family happens. No reasonable person is offended by necessity. But there is a kind of call that tells the person beside you, without saying it plainly, “Stay there. Be paused. I will return to you when I am done spending myself elsewhere.” And perhaps that is what stings. Not the phone. The ranking. Because before the call, there was a human being in front of you. Breathing. Listening. Giving you the rare currency of undivided time. And in a world where everyone is scattered, where attention is broken into pieces, where people are half-present even at their own dinner tables, someone choosing to be fully with you is not a small thing. It is a gift.
