My mother was a switch board operator. We checked into a motel that still used one. While checking in, it did buzz and without skipping a beat, she grabbed the headset and answered it. I watched everything she did and was there for a few mins answering calls. Then she came back to reality. She looked like she was having fun. This was after 30 years of not using one.

My grandma and (her sister)my great aunt used to be switchboard operators and she would tell me stories of how their favorite thing was listening in on so many people’s conversations.

My grandmother was a switchboard operator & it's how she found out that my grandpa was going to propose. She was working while he was traveling through town as a salesman (he would stay in an area for a few months) and he called his little sister back home to tell her "I've found the girl I'm going to marry". She connected the call 🤭

to think this was rendered outdated because one woman decided to redirect all funeral business to her husband's funeral home. (the guy who found out would go on to invent the first version of an automated system)
