based on his calm stance, placement of where he tied his leash and general look of confidence on a board, he should be at most slightly annoyed that you took his wave, especially when he should know you where out there with a coach (and likely not alone). and if he is annoyed, he should direct that towards your coach who sent you on that wave, and not you

I’m a bit confused; how are you meant to know it’s his wave? It seems like you both would have set off at the same time, you’re going with the wave and he’s carving across it, so why would it be his priority? I’m aware some surfers get very angry about it but I can’t understand what the ‘rules’ are.

If you know nothing about surfing please don’t comment “he does not own the sea” 😅 this is a sport with set rules and etiquette. The fact is that it was his wave and she did drop in. And even if you are in the “beginner section” of the lineup the problem is that you are going straight and he is riding the wave sideways. You have cut off his wave and he is stuck going forward in whitewash. He does not seem annoyed though, so i think you’re good :)
