based on his calm stance, placement of where he tied his leash and general look of confidence on a board, he should be at most slightly annoyed that you took his wave, especially when he should know you where out there with a coach (and likely not alone). and if he is annoyed, he should direct that towards your coach who sent you on that wave, and not you

I’m a bit confused; how are you meant to know it’s his wave? It seems like you both would have set off at the same time, you’re going with the wave and he’s carving across it, so why would it be his priority? I’m aware some surfers get very angry about it but I can’t understand what the ‘rules’ are.

ive surfed for nearly 20 years now in NJ and truly do not understand why people are so aggro, I'm way too high and relaxing to give a fuck about a wave that nobody owns, I always give priority but my friends and I go when it's later/less known beaches
