*COMPH JUNE NOVENA* *REFLECTION DAY ONE* *The Teaching on Iconography* Let us begin by asking the question: What is an Icon? An icon is derived from the Greek word eikon, which means image. It is a Christian sacred art in signs and symbols. They are Gospel messages represented in art. Icons point beyond what they are to the spiritual realm. A famous Greek Iconographer wrote, “Icons raise the soul and mind to the realm of the spirit.” In the Eastern Church, icons are referred to as, “windows into heaven.” And they have inspired and uplifted millions of the faithful, and many times have been the instruments for demonstrating God’s miraculous intercession in the life of mankind. The study of icon is called Iconography. Iconography, therefore, is the original tradition of Christian sacred art and has been an integral part of the worship and mystical life of Christians since the times of the Apostles. Church tradition teaches that the first Iconographer was Saint Luke the Evangelist. There are at least five highly-venerated icons of the Blessed Virgin painted by Him, which are still venerated today. The beginnings of iconography can also be found in the catacomb paintings of the second and third centuries. Iconography was given special favour by the early Byzantine Empire through Emperor Constantine. Iconography flourished throughout the Empire in the form of mosaic, frescoes, (or wall paintings), and panel icons. Many of the Church fathers made use of icons in their spiritual life and renewal. For instance, Saint Basil the Great said, “With a soundless voice, the icons teach those who behold them.” But iconography became a subject of great controversy in the seventh and eighth centuries. The Iconoclasts (or “icon- smashers or haters) began the destruction of icons. Iconoclasm misconstrued icons veneration to be the practice of idolatry and saw it as a practice against the scripture. They treated icons with disdain. However, Iconodules (or venerators of icons) vigorously defended the place of icons in the life of the Church. The veneration of the icon was upheld by the seventh and last Ecumenical Council, which met in Nicaea in 787 A.D. If we can cherish our photos, artwork or painting, or drawing of us or our loved ones, parents, that give us good memories beyond what they represent? How much more should we pay attention to the Christian sacred icons we have in the Church. One of those rare icons is the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. *Prayer* _Through Mary our Mother, may we come to appreciate the gift of Icons, sacred images as a means to come closer to God.
