Elden Ring probably deserves every single accolade that’s come it’s way. It probably really is one of the greatest games of all time. I unfortunately am horrible at it and hate it as a result. Ya live and learn.

See but the problem with both of those games is Elden ring won’t kick your ass and in balatro there is actually something to do other than get the high scores. Yeah if you reduce everything down to its bare component it’s gonna sound less fun. (Unless you realize that and it’s just for the sake of brevity, in which case ignore the rest of this essay. I’m high and like writing when I’m high) Elden ring is an open world game, if you get your ass kicked in one area or by one boss just come back later stronger. You get to go off and explore the beautiful environments, learn interesting lore, meet interesting and cool characters, all of this has nothing to do with getting your ass kicked. Getting your ass kicked is avoidable in Elden ring. (I quit ds2 because it was too hard and barely made it through Sekiro cause I loved the parry system). In balatro, the goal is to unlock the decks and complete all of the stakes, which yes involves getting your score high, but the fun for me more comes from figuring out synergies and configuring my deck. All of this isn’t to say you have to play those games or whatever, it’s that saying you KNOW you won’t like something you haven’t played just isn’t true. You know you won’t like an aspect of the game, but maybe the rest of the game is enough for that to be worth it. You don’t know because you haven’t played it.

I know I just have unc status now. The kids are recommending me games that are just spiritual successors to games I got bored of 5-10 years ago lol. Like, don’t recommend a Battle Royale to me child, I got bored of BR’s when PUBG was a mod for Arma 3 lol. And I’m sure Elden Ring is amazing… but I already spent 150 hours stoned out of my mind trying to navigate Blight Town 10 years ago lol.

There’s one every year. 2024 was Dragons Dogma 2, 25 was KCD2 this year it’s Crimson Desert. I’ve been playing games long enough to know my tastes and while I believe that all of those are of quality I just personally don’t have interest. People don’t seem to understand the difference between not wanting to play something and thinking it’s bad.
