Makes me think of "people never really die, their memory lives through others. Once the words stop, then so does the person's story." Which version of us lives on through stories told and how much does it differ from who we really are? Hmmmm....

Yes, Plato appears to use Socrates as an evolving philosophical mask. In the early dialogues, Socrates is an elenctic questioner, in the middle dialogues a teacher (forms, the Republic) and curiously in the later dialogues an almost peripheral symbolic figure.

there is this saying that you are only truly dead when the last person who knew you dies. perhaps socrates’ greatest accomplishment wasn’t even about him being a great philosopher, but that he was a great philosopher in front of someone who was so vastly inspired by his ideas and who could go on to create and spread this almost mythical image of socrates that we know today.
