if the quote was £15000. and they say £16500. I'd pay , if the work was good . but if the now say £20000 different story

I think you should have been told as soon as they realized.

The installer eats the cost, if they can’t accurately quote a job that’s on them, the customer agreed to a price, that’s what they pay.

They should have identified that before starting work. I’ve had jobs before that I’ve mis-quoted. I sucked it up. It’s not the clients fault. Reputation is everything. Potentially a conversation about meeting half way

No would of been willing to meet halfway maybe just for the fact its a great job but the other company has to suck the mistake in aswell but not having a itemised estimate is something you wont do again in a hurry !!🤣

A quote is legally binding an estimate is not

This should have been raised immediately the error was found, not right at the end at invoicing. I may have negotiated with them but sure as hell would not have swallowed the entire cost of their mistake.

Gotta find that balance, if the wuote had included the costing for the missing items, would you have accepted it, on the exact same terms.? At the end of the day its a fault on both ends, them for mis-quoting, and to a small degree, you for not chasing up an itemised quote for your own peace of mind, or realising it was a bit low and questioning it. I would have expected the installer to find a discount in the additional as a gesture towards the inconvenience of having to find the added cost, but really, work was done and needs paying for.

I always send an email or text to confirm the quote. If it’s my mistake I always take the hit

You had a quote and that is that, you owe them nothing, if anything they owe you for a life’s lesson in business, next job they do they won’t make the same mistake again

depends on the reason for the additional cost and at what point you were told. ie have they started and found another issue to be fixed or

When we put a quote forward that is the price, we don’t add extras on at the end to surprise the customer and cause confrontation, and if there is variations it is communicated and signed off on. We would personally take the hit and consider it lesson learned, a big price increase means someone hasn’t done there job correctly, so why should you pay for that?

No, they quoted, you accepted. If nothing was brought up prior to the invoice with an agreement then no contract was made. Won’t even stand in a claim …

quote Vs estimate, I can and will hold you to a quote. But the difference and the relationship and warranty period has to be considered. A small amount like 5-10% of total and I might eat it but I'd push for discount. but you mentioned 7k over , absolutely not. I would start from the position of zero give on that and if I need them for follow up work consider a Max of 1k but if they have a bad attitude about it, then it back to your fault your legal quotation your mistake and cut ties knowing they are not to be used again and let everyone know they can't add up and avoid.

There fault for not itemising the quote. I would be tempted to tell them to swing for it. But being in business I would sit down with them & get them to break the original quote down completely & see how they come up with the price. If it’s clear it was an innocent mistake maybe you can agree on a fair price increase. But as soon as they new mistakes were made they should have told you.

Would ask for receipts for the materials and what markup they are using to make sure everything lines up with what they are saying and then make a decision from there. If it’s legit and you need it then its only fair to pay, but depending on your personal situation, you’d be entitled to ask for time to pay the extra

If its an item that you actually got, and that you needed, then I’d probably pay it, but if its labour that they should have included, then I’d pay the cost, but it’s not a great advert for a professional company.
