Every day in the wilderness is different, and that’s what makes this experience so special. With a little luck, we may encounter the king of the Pantanal — the jaguar. Today, we found a very famous female jaguar named Nina. As we slowly approached, she began making a powerful sound. This sound is called a “roar” or “sawing call,” one of the most iconic vocalizations of the jaguar. She may be warning us that this is her territory, calling for a male during mating season, or even communicating with one of her cubs nearby. Most of the time, when we get close, Nina lets everyone know she is there. She starts roaring through the forest, showing her strength and presence. Nina is known as the dominant female around the Piuval Lodge area, a true queen of this territory in the Pantanal. During our tours, we are sometimes lucky enough to witness unforgettable moments like this — seeing a wild jaguar resting, walking through the bush, or moving silently through her territory.
