This is not accurate. The FDCPA does not make it illegal for a debt collector or debt buyer to purchase debt and attempt to collect it. In fact, the law specifically regulates debt collectors because debt buying is a legal and common practice. What consumers do have is the right to dispute a debt and request validation. If a collector cannot substantiate the debt or prove ownership, collection efforts may be limited or stopped. That's very different from saying the debt becomes invalid simply because it was sold. As someone who works in collections, I would encourage people to read the actual FDCPA rather than rely on social media summaries that misstate the law.

They need to disclose how much they paid for the debt. If they paid 50$ on a 1000$ debt. Then they can only charge $60.

I work for a company that uses debt collectors. We have never sold the debt owed. They take over collecting for the amount owed with all their legal jargin. If the debt gets paid to them, they take a percentage take based on the age of debt owed and then we get the remaining amount. The debtor can very well pay us directly and cut out the collector. The debt collector does not earn anything off a debt paid unless it the payment goes through them.

UK if they bought the debt then they can ask you pay it but they cannot enforce it as you have no contract with debt collectors even though they are fluent in bs to try and get you pay all they can do is ask! This does not cover court fines only civil debt. If it a criminal debt like parking fines and court orders different rules apply. Do not be conned by debt collectors saying its been to court as if it had you would have been invited to state your case. Get professional help if you have debt 👍
