@driphistorian: THE FOURTH WIFE | Anne of Cleves (1515–1557) was Queen of England for just six months in 1540 as the fourth wife of King Henry VIII. Chosen through a Protestant political alliance, her first meeting with the king was a disaster. When Henry surprised her in disguise on New Year's Day—expecting a romantic courtly reaction—she failed to recognise him and brushed him off, deeply wounding his pride. Though Henry loudly complained she was physically unappealing and blamed a supposedly flattering portrait by Hans Holbein for deceiving him, this was likely just a convenient excuse to save face after his humiliating rejection. Recognising the profound danger of her position when Henry quickly sought to end the unconsummated marriage, Anne astutely agreed to an annulment without resistance. Her pragmatism was richly rewarded; Henry granted her a generous financial settlement, prime properties including Hever Castle, and the esteemed honorary title of "The King's Beloved Sister."
