I’ve been trimming an assortment of jars all week so that I’ve got enough work to fill the top shelves of my gas kiln, I didn’t quite produce enough for five firings so I’m rushing through some larger urn forms to take up all that extra space.   With the success of all the miniature pots I’ve made recently, I now want to gradually shift that focus to scaled up jars. I’ll start slow, (small relatively), before working my way up in size, so I get comfortable throwing with larger masses of clay, instead of heading straight to the end goal.    When scaling down I tried my hardest to retain a certain level of ‘finish’, it was tricky, immensely so, at with tiny vessels that are practically weightless they barely stay attached to the wheel as they’re being trimmed. Whereas that’s the opposite with these as their sheer weight helps to hold them in place throughout the entire process. Still, it isn’t all positive, with the main issue with bigger pots is simply the drying time, especially from freshly thrown to leather hard. Normally, I can rush this a bit and if it imparts some undulations into the vessel, then so be, I’ll trim around them, but with larger pots I feel as if these wobbles become more noticeable and unmanageable, resulting in a much more prolonged, even drying out, as opposed to just leaving them out in the open.   As a pot dries, if the clay stiffens up on one side faster than the other, the walls constrict quicker and thus the piece will ‘lean’ in that direction, this makes trimming an utter nightmare. Of course, with larger pots, there’s more surface area, and I find that in my draughty workshop pots that were thrown nice and straight can be bent over to one side in the morning if left uncovered. Dealing with that gets boring really quickly and nowadays I simply sling plastic over everything, allowing the drying to happen far more slowly but in a more controlled environment.   #wheelthrownpottery #studioceramics #maker #handmade #ceramics
