This is so validating and frustrating. I have a clinically dysfunctional working memory and almost no capacity for memorization. So I’ve been forced to use deep learning to compensate. Essentially relying on analytical reading and synoptical processes. But the educational environments I grew up in From primary to graduate school, punished this and made it harder to use my tools. I would’ve loved an environment that supported and reinforced deep learning.

I live in synoptical reading. It's really fun and helpful. I utilize all of these tools and also teach them. Highlighting is helpful for pausing and noticing what's important to you, but the common place notebook is HUGE. I always challenge myself and students to reflect on what was read by writing it down. I never reread anything by and only go back to highlights for reference if I'm pointing someone to the page. But I remember everything because it's weaved into an experience. Writing is a way to bring your voice to the discourse being digested, which creates an "experience" that creates memory in the brain. Very helpful

That top level was why I dropped out towards the end of my philosophy, politics, anthropology degree. I couldn't get through the material quickly enough because I always got bogged down in analysis. Every essay became a rabbit hole to get to the bottom of stuff like meaning, truth, colonialism, racism ... I couldn't keep up.

I also did my entire PhD (mostly) at analytical reading because I never learned to do the lower levels as part of research. it was gruelling. I'm better at picking which articles to read only now that I'm done. when you say that academics operate at a cursory level most of the time, you're right. I've also discovered this happens more in the sciences (I imagine because the humanities doesn't have a clear 'results' section and instead builds an argument brick by brick).

I'm currently fighting that illusion, getting trained in science comm and I'm using that in my reporting and I can see that although I know what people are talking about when they reference books, brands, studies, theories, I cannot pull them up on my own with no googling and I have to sit down and spend time crafting the message. I need to relearn all of it in a different way. I'm very intrigued by Adler, thank you for this rec

When I would get used books in college and only ones festooned with highlighting were left, I eventually realized about 2/3 had no idea what the text was saying based on the highlighting.
