I'm German and I noticed, when i see a stranger in a context that I want them feel welcome, I stare extra much because I guess I want them to feel seen, acknowledged and invited. instead if I don't have the headspace to meet new people, or I don't want a person to be there, I will avoid eye contact.

in school here in germany eye contact is being taught to us because its important to show that we’re confident and committed to the conversation.

Despite having two great-grandparents from West Prussia, staring did not get handed down. In fact, I'm AuDHD. I'd flunk the eye contact part in about 2.7 seconds.😆

Staring is still considered rude but taking a look at people is normal. I'm a woman with a shaved head and people love staring, I just stare back until they avert their gaze 😂

At a Greek airport, I watched an elderly man and tried to figure out his language. Suddenly, he looked me in the eye, and I felt caught while using the German stareand felt terrible. It wasn’t disrespect but rather fascination and curiosity. At the end, we smiled at each other. Everything fine.😅
