Just to specify when I said “choose a dialect” I was thinking more for complete beginners. Most people in Ireland will naturally learn a dialect or standardised Irish based off of where they’re from or their teacher and often don’t get a “choice” in terms of what dialect they speak. I personally think using the Irish that is most familiar and easiest to you is the best way to go

all the years in school we've had different teachers with different dialects. The best was from Sligo originally. it was a mix of Ulster and Connacht Irish

I’ve a good level & understanding of Gaeilge but I’m tore between which dialect to choose. How did you choose a specific dialect? Or did you choose one from where you’re from. Thanks

This is great advice. I’m trying to get back into speaking Irish. I can read it to a certain extent with no issues, but bc of the way I learnt at school, I have very little understanding when hearing it or speaking it.

I am so unsure of what dialect to use, I went to school in Dublin but our teacher used Ulster Irish for a lot of pronunciations (not grammar), but I find the Ulster dialect the hardest. what would you say is the easiest or most common?

Is Duolingo good for gaeilge? I’ve realised that they now used a tts voice instead of using an actual gaeilgeor and I’m pretty sure the pronouncing is if because it’s meant for an Irish accent more than the language.
