How was Abu Dhabi transformed from a desert town into one of the world’s most organised cities? 🇦🇪 In 1967, when Abu Dhabi had a population of only around 40,000, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan invited Japanese urban planner Dr Katsuhiko Takahashi to help shape the future of the city. At that time, Abu Dhabi was still largely desert. Even the area we now know as the Corniche had not yet been developed. Sheikh Zayed and Takahashi stood together on the desert sand and discussed the city’s future. According to Takahashi’s account, they even sketched plans in the sand using a camel stick. Sheikh Zayed’s vision was clear: wide roads, organised development, trees and greenery. That vision later became the foundation of modern Abu Dhabi. Today, the city is known for its broad avenues, grid-pattern road network, beautiful greenery and well-planned neighbourhoods. From a small desert town to the modern capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi’s incredible transformation reflects the extraordinary vision and leadership of the late Sheikh Zayed.
