![What is it about the whisper of steam against a snow-laden sky that feels like poetry in motion? In the remote wilds of Vișeu de Sus, the Mocănița steam train awakens the senses. Its iron frame trembles with life, cutting a path through the frostbitten embrace of the Vaser Valley. Here, winter’s dominion is absolute—rivers murmuring beneath veils of ice, forests cloaked in alabaster, and mountains that seem to slumber beneath a heavy quilt of snow. The locomotive, a relic of another time, breathes clouds into the air, turning the world into a dream of ephemeral silhouettes. The journey feels like stepping into the pages of a forgotten fable. Plumes of steam rise like phantoms, dissolving into the cold ether as the train winds along a serpentine track. The trees, ancient sentinels, glisten with frozen tears, and the river, always near, glides in icy silence. Passengers huddle close, faces warmed by the fire within, while outside, the winter realm stretches endlessly—an empire of frost, light, and shadow. Time slows; each creak of the wheels echoes with the past, each hiss of steam whispers stories of mountain spirits and woodcutters. By the time the train halts, frost etches lace on the windows, and the sun begins its descent, painting the snowfields in strokes of gold and rose. In such a place, the line between what is real and what is imagined seems to blur. Isn’t this what travel is meant to do? To remind us that wonder lies waiting in the unlikeliest corners of the world?
