Just a little bit more information here, the beneficial bacteria having more surface area is one of the biggest factors of these toxic properties being kept at balanced levels. Plants readily absorb nitrates and ammonia but benefial bacteria are the ones who convert the nitrites and ammonia into the nitrate (plant food). So the more surface area for these guys, the more conversions you have for your toxic properties!
