orange peel trinket box 🍊 an ode to 18th century bergamot boxes. Did you know that you can turn an orange peel into a whimsical little trinket box?! I’ve seen these around a bunch and they’ve been on my list to try out— so I’ve been spending the last few weeks making many of these (and trying out a combination of techniques) until I settled on a process that I liked! They are really fun to make but take a little bit of trial and error since there are a bunch of factors during the drying process. I love how they turned out! Sharing my process below and what I used. How to: Cut your orange in half and hollow out the flesh. If you don’t want the stem on top you can cut the orange lengthwise (through the stem) instead. Place each side on opposite ends of a spice jar. Place a rubber band over the orange so that it is held tightly against the form. Let dry completely. This can take up to a week depending on all factors. Once dry, remove from the jar, trim and sand. Fill with trinkets and treasures ✨ TIPS & THINGS: I found that the peel sometimes stuck to the glass as it was drying so I found it necessary to wrap the jar ends with a small amount of cling wrap. While drying I check on them daily and move the rubber band around before removing it entirely towards the end (when it looks like the peel has already taken on the shape of the form). After it’s all dry the top theoretically should fit over the bottom but I did have some that didn’t dry well so I recommend making multiple so that you should at least have some combination of pieces to complete a box ** A big thank you to @wilsonisokay who shared their process for these which I found to be the most helpful in getting started! ** #naturecrafts #upcycledcrafts #orangepeelbox #bergamotbox #orangebox
