@wingsofarmenia2: Geghard is one of Armenia’s most famous medieval monasteries and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery was partly carved directly into the surrounding cliffs, making it unique in Armenian architecture. The name “Geghard” means “spear” in Armenian. According to tradition, the spear that pierced Jesus during the crucifixion was once kept there. The monastery’s full historical name was Ayrivank, meaning “Monastery of the Cave.” Geghard was founded in the 4th century, but most of the current buildings were constructed in the 12th–13th centuries. It is surrounded by beautiful mountains and located near the Azat River Gorge, about an hour from Yerevan.#geghard #Armenia #wingsofarmenia #Kotayk #Monasteries
