Vasili Arkhipov was a Soviet naval officer who is widely remembered for helping prevent a possible nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. On 27 October 1962, Arkhipov was aboard the Soviet submarine B-59, which was carrying a nuclear torpedo. The submarine had lost contact with Moscow and was being surrounded by U.S. Navy ships, which dropped small signaling depth charges to force it to surface. The crew did not know these explosions were warnings and feared that World War III might have already begun. The submarine’s captain wanted to fire the nuclear torpedo. Because Arkhipov was the flotilla’s chief of staff, launching the weapon required his approval as well. He refused to agree and convinced the captain to surface instead of launching the torpedo. Many historians believe that if the torpedo had been launched, it could have triggered a nuclear conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States. For that reason, Arkhipov is often called “the man who saved the world,” although historians note that history is complex and no one can know with certainty what would have happened afterward. Arkhipov continued serving in the Soviet Navy, eventually becoming a vice admiral. His role in the crisis was not widely known until many years later, after Cold War documents and testimonies became public. #vasiliarkhipov #humanityfirst #antitcc #fyp #themanwhosavedtheworld
