And was never caught. 😳 The Zodiac operated in Northern California between 1968 and 1969. He didn't just unalive people. He made it a game. He sent letters to newspapers with encrypted ciphers daring investigators to crack them. In one letter he wrote — I like unaliving people because it is so much fun. It is more fun than unaliving wild game in the forest. ⚠️ He claimed to have unalived 37 people. Police only ever confirmed 5. The others were never found. He sent 4 encrypted messages to police. Three of them went unsolved for over 50 years. The fourth was finally cracked in 2020 by a software developer sitting at home in his spare bedroom. Inside it read — I hope you are having lots of fun trying to catch me. 😳 The police had suspects. They had DNA. They had fingerprints. None of it was ever enough. In 2021 a team of cold case investigators claimed they finally identified him as Gary Francis Poste — a former Air Force sergeant. The FBI rejected their findings.
