When it comes to your gut microbiome, we generally want diversity. Lots of different beneficial microorganisms creating a rich ecosystem. But your vaginal microbiome works differently. A healthy vaginal microbiome is often dominated by Lactobacillus species, which help maintain the vaginal environment and provide protection against opportunistic organisms. When that protective Lactobacillus dominance is disrupted, the vaginal environment can become more susceptible to dysbiosis and conditions such as bacterial vaginosis or recurrent Candida symptoms. And this becomes particularly interesting when we’re talking about fertility. The vaginal microbiome, cervical environment and reproductive tract are increasingly being studied for their potential relationships with fertility and reproductive outcomes. It doesn’t mean that every woman struggling to conceive has a microbiome problem, but recurrent thrush, BV, unusual discharge, irritation or recurrent vaginal symptoms are things I want to know about when taking a fertility history. Because when someone is told they have “unexplained infertility”, I still want to ask what may not have been investigated yet. I talk about this and much more in my latest YouTube episode: Why Aren’t You Falling Pregnant? 7 Reasons You May Be Struggling to Conceive Watch the full episode on YouTube @Nourishingapothecary Australia wide consultations available via Zoom www.nourishingapothecary.com #VaginalMicrobiome #Fertility #TryingToConceive #TTC #Candida
