@life_change250: On March 16th 1968 between 347 and 504 unarmed Vietnamese civilians were killed at My Lai. Women. Children. Elderly men. While it was happening Warrant Officer Hugh Thompson flew over in his helicopter. He saw what was unfolding. He landed between American soldiers and Vietnamese civilians. Ordered his two crew members to train their weapons on the soldiers and open fire if the killing continued. He personally evacuated survivors. Radioed commanders demanding it stop. Filed a full report. The Army buried the report. Thompson received death threats for 30 years. Dead animals on his doorstep. Congressional representatives called him a traitor. In 1998 the Army awarded him the Soldier's Medal. He accepted it. Then said publicly that some responsible men should have been court-martialed instead of decorated. He died in 2006.
