@tangmathgames: Math puzzle time! 116 students, 1/4 girls & 1/7 boys got an A. 23 total A's. Can you find the number of girls? Drawing it out makes it way easier! #MathPuzzles #ProblemSolving #TikTokMath #StudyHacks #DidYouKnow
That is VERY creative.
i'd rather do it algebraically. But if I didn't know algebra, that is really cool reasoning.

Too many people in the comments arguing that one way is faster or the other way is faster. Not enough people realizing that both are *doing the same thing*

Procedural vs conceptual. Many like to argue in favor for algebra with arguments of time/efficiency but when asked to explain, can not (in many cases). Bar modeling or strip diagrams are useful.

The second way is how my brain works. It was the reason I could get the right answer but couldn’t “show” my work.

I did it a bit differently. I knew that having 1/7 of the boys getting an A meant the total number of boys needed to be divisible by seven, and so would the girls by four. And because 116 is already divisible by four the number of boys had to be factors of four and seven. So by a very quick process of elimination (28 and 88 doesn’t work) got to 56 boys (8 with A’s) and 60 girls (15 with A’s).

He's doing it the exact same way as "algebraic" but just visually

Practical logic like this isn’t something that’s taught very well. Some people have an intuitive ability to do this offer rip and some people would really benefit from having these analogies explained and taught.

You also know the amount of girls has to be divisible by 4 and boys divisible by 7

These are the kinds of teachers we need because not everyone thinks/solves problems the same way, but you can still get to the same (correct) answer.

This is really great. I think this is really useful for helping people be able to visualize what a word problem is actually describing.

It's not about the expedience at which you find the answer. It's about understanding and visualizing what is being asked, and what the algebra represents.

I simply thought of it as the number of girls is divisible by 4, the number of boys is divisible by 7, so 4G + 7B = 116. Then we have the second equation of G + 7 = 23. That means G = 15, B = 8, or there are 60 girls and 56 boys.
