How are you a professor yet gave clearly not read the Iliad and yet speak so confidently? First of all, Hector only fights Achilles when Athena disguised as his brother assures him that he is not alone and they can take on Achilles, once he realizes that he was deceived it is too late.

bruh let's not insult hector like that, all in all he was the best among those men even from a modern point of view. he is a heroic character and a product of his time, so his death might not seem logical to us, but he died for honour and for his sense of duty as a prince. it is tragic, but not stupid. he was a good man, he was one of the fewer who never blamed helen for paris' actions and he was a leader who cared about his soldiers' lives. i like him, all in all, and definitely not as a toxic macho man caricature.

I loved hector when I read Troy and he's still my favourite Character. Hector's character wasn't some form of toxic masculinity being masculine isn't a bad thing as long as you don't make it toxic. He was one of the few men who actually loved wife's didn't cheat made sure you go back to her. he listens to her and still did at this point but he couldn't ignore his duty. So it's more tragic than anything, this was a war caused by his brother whom he didn't know for long. But he's fighting for his wife, child and kingdom not him.

Hector had a heroic soul, but his dedication to “honor” instead of reality was deeply problematic. He died for his honor, and that is a noble thing, but he also left his wife and child to suffer and die horribly for his honor, which is neither heroic nor noble. Not peak masculinity, and certainly not true protection. 😅
