Shrine= Shinto, has torii gate, guardian lion-dogs, Objects of worship: Sacred natural objects, mirrors, swords, or nature spirits (kami) Whereas Temples=Buddhism, has Pagodas, Object of worship: Buddha

I’m in Japan for the first now 8/26 and I totally get Shinto . Japan is the cleanest and most beautiful place I’ve ever visited in this world 🌍

A shrine usually has a Tori gate in front of it, a Buddhist temple has Buddha inside and figures guarding it outside and sometimes there is a Big bell

I always look at it as a temple is a whole facility, like an entire compound. A shrine can be a small part of the temple, where the god resides, where you pray. A shrine can also be a small, for example roadside spot where a god resides. Like every temple has a shrine, but not every shrine is at a temple. But that’s my opinion. 🥰🥰

To distinguish between shrine and temple is if there is a water fountain at the entrance it is a shrine.
