esearch is finding microplastics in some of the most common and unsuspecting foods… here are 7 everyday foods found in the supermarket. Salt - a study of seven common types of salt found the highest levels in coarse Himalayan pink rock salt and black salt. Terrestrial/mined salts like these showed more contamination than sea salts, likely from processing, packaging and storage. Go for salt tested for microplastics like Murray River Salt. Apples - ranked among the most microplastic contaminated fruits in a 2020 Environmental Research study. Researchers detected hundreds of thousands of microplastic particles per gram in some samples, likely from contaminated soil, irrigation water, air, and packaging exposure. Thoroughly wash and peel, or opt for loose and local/organic produce. Pre-Cooked Rice - University of QLD found pre-cooked rice has roughly 4 times the amount of microplastics than regular uncooked rice due to the processing and plastic packaging. Heating in pouches add significantly more. Switch to dry bulk rice and wash it thoroughly, cook it traditionally, and store in glass. Chicken Nuggets - a 2024 study found highly processed items like chicken nuggets and breaded products contain far more particles than fresh chicken breast, mainly from processing equipment and packaging. Go for fresh and pasture raised chicken from the butcher or farmers market. Carrots - a 2020 study found that carrots top the list for microplastics among vegetables due to contaminated soil and irrigation. Because they grow underground, root vegetables accumulate more particles than many above ground crops. Washing and peeling can help reduce exposure but doesn’t eliminate everything. Bottled Water - a key 2022 study tested 16 brands and 94% had particles, including PP, PET, and PE. Recent tests have reported even higher nanoplastics, sometimes hundreds of thousands per litre from bottling and packaging. Swap the plastic bottle for filtered water in a stainless steel or glass bottle. Microwave Meals - one of the most significant sources of microplastic exposure, as heating releases large numbers of micro and nanoplastic particles into food. Avoid them. #microplastics
