A Quick Marsilea Hirsuta Care Guide! - Easy Carpeting Plant For Low-Tech Planted Tanks! Here’s a quick care guide for Marsilea hirsuta 🌱—one of the best low-tech carpeting plants in the aquarium hobby, and easily one of the most unique thanks to its four-leaf clover appearance. This plant is incredibly beginner-friendly. It’s slow-growing, low maintenance, and perfect if you don’t want to constantly trim your carpet or dose loads of fertilisers. Once established, it pretty much takes care of itself. For best results, aim for temperatures between 22–28°C (72–82°F). It prefers slightly soft water, with a pH somewhere between 5 and 7, but it’s fairly adaptable as long as your tank is stable. Lighting is flexible, which makes it great for low-tech setups. However, moderate lighting is the sweet spot if you want that tight, compact carpet look. In lower light, it may grow taller and more spaced out, giving a slightly different appearance. One of the biggest advantages of Marsilea hirsuta is that you don’t need a CO2 system. The natural CO2 levels in your tank are enough to support healthy growth, making it ideal for simple, budget-friendly setups. Substrate-wise, I’ve personally grown it in aquasoil with great results, but it also does well in capped dirt tanks. As long as there are nutrients available at the root level, it should thrive. It spreads by sending out runners across the substrate. Over time, these runners develop into new plants, slowly forming a carpet across the foreground. Just be patient—this isn’t a fast grower, but that slow growth is part of what makes it so easy to manage. If you’re looking for a low-effort carpeting plant that still looks amazing, Marsilea hirsuta is definitely worth trying. #aquarium #fishkeeping#fishtank #plantedtank #plantedaquarium #aquariumplants #aquaticplants
