GONDO OLIVER MTUKUDZI (TUKU) 🦅 THE SONG THAT TAUGHT US DIGNITY Oliver Mtukudzi was not just a musician, he was a teacher. And in "Gondo", he gave us one of his deepest life lessons. What does Gondo mean? Gondo means EAGLE in Shona. But Tuku is not singing about a bird he is singing about US about human nature when we are in pain. The chorus repeats "Gondo rapotsa nhiyo rine shungu, rinokumba chero marara" "Gondo rashaya nhiyo rine shungu iri, rinokumba chero marara" Translation "The eagle that has lost its chick is in so much pain and grief, it will scavenge and eat even rubbish/trash." An eagle is a king of the sky. It is powerful, it hunts fresh meat, it never eats leftovers. But when it loses its child the pain is so deep that it forgets who it is. It becomes desperate it starts picking anything from the dustbin just to survive. Then Tuku turns to you and says "Hurombo hurombo, usaite segondo" "Kunetseka unganetseka hako sei, usaite segondo" "Kutambura ungatambura hako sei usaite segondo" "You can be poor, you can be worried, you can suffer but don't be like the eagle that loses its dignity." The deeper message for today Tuku saw what poverty and loss does to people in Zimbabwe and across Africa when a mother loses her job, when a father cannot feed his children, when a young person fails in life the pain can make you do things you never thought you would do. You start to steal, to lie, to sell your body, to betray your friends, to complain and grumble every day "Kuswero gunun'una gunun'una". Tuku says Don't. Your suffering is real, but don't let suffering make you lose your character an eagle should remain an eagle even when it is crying a human should remain a human even when broke. That is why this song from the album Vhunze Moto still lives forever it was not just music, it was counseling it was Tuku telling his people: I know you are in pain but keep your pride. God will see you through. This is for everyone who is going through a hard season right now. Tuku is telling you: Hold on. Don't scavenge your time will come. Rest in Peace Samanyanga. Your voice still heals us🕊️🇿🇼
