Known historically as “Narai of a Thousand Houses” (Narai Senken), this was the wealthiest and longest post town along the Nakasendō trail, the ancient mountain highway connecting Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo). Travelers would rest here before tackling the grueling ascent over the nearby Toritoge Pass. Today, the town stretches for about 1 kilometer, making it the longest intact post town in Japan.
