The empire and all this started with The legendary treasure of Siraj-ud-Daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal, was systematically plundered and emptied immediately following his defeat at the Battle of Plassey in 1757.
Following the betrayal of the Nawab, puppet ruler Mir Jafar opened the doors of the royal vault to Robert Clive. Clive filled boats and ships with gold coins, jewels, silver plates, rubies, and sapphires.
The Clive Collection: Much of this personal plunder was transported back to the UK. Today, a large collection of these stolen Mughal artefacts and treasures is preserved at Powis Castle in Wales, managed by the National Trust.
The sudden influx of liquid wealth from Bengal into London banks provided the primary capital investment that funded the development of machinery, textile factories, and infrastructure during the birth of the British Industrial Revolution.
