Another year, Day 1 of the Federal Duck Stamp done (: Ebb & Flow, two long-tailed ducks riding the waves. I’m incredibly proud of how the contest has blossomed. When I first entered in 2019, there were 193 entries. This year, 331 were judged, and the largest age group entering were 21-30 year olds. We’re still nowhere near the heyday of the 1980s, surpassing 2,000 entrants, but I see a steady incline and a growing community of people who see ducks, and wildlife, conservation, and art as a interesting new world that they want to support. I’ve seen so many entries online this year, it warms my heart. It was never really my intention to start this “trend,” but I couldn’t be happier with the enthusiasm I’ve seen for the contest. Congratulations to anyone who entered for the first time! A great feat! And thank you to anyone who’s returned to try again 🤍 I know the foundation of the duck stamp program has been rocky for many years, despite being one of the best wildlife fundraisers in the US. I hope it always remains. Thank you to everyone who makes it happen (a shockingly small team) and they’re sadly saying goodbye to Jerome Ford, who has been such a strong advocate for this program and the junior competition for many years. Thank you Jerome. Thank you to @Ducks Unlimited for hosting this year, and all the work you do for waterfowl. I received 1 out of 5 ins on the first round of judging, something I’m very used to ha, but it truly doesn’t get me down. I’m excited to try again next year. I might be doing things differently. Thanks everyone for the love and support over the years!! Truly unbelievable. My painting consisted of 50 hours of procreate prep drawing - a trip to Connecticut where I got to photograph long-tailed ducks (Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy) and 93 hours and 46 minutes of oil painting. No time wasted. I love this competition. Day 2 judging tomorrow! 10am CT (link in my bio) people’s choice voting (link in my story), and a huge congratulations to all the entries advancing!!
