Even President Adama Barrow has never denied the role the UDP played in his political journey. He has openly acknowledged that when he was in the UDP, the party supported him and worked with him. He never said UDP did nothing for him, and he never tried to erase the contribution of the party that gave him the platform to rise. So it is disappointing to hear Mayor Ahmed Bensouda speak as if the UDP was not the main force behind his position as Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council. Yes, coalitions and supporters from different groups may have contributed, but the truth remains that he was presented to the Gambian people under the UDP ticket in both 2017 and 2021. UDP supporters campaigned, sacrificed, and voted for him. When he resigned, he resigned from the position of Organizing Secretary, not from the UDP itself. Later, after forming his political movement and speaking in places like Kerr Fatou, he began downplaying the role of the UDP by saying that “not only UDP gave me this position.” Statements like that sound ungrateful to many loyal supporters who stood with him from the beginning. Nobody is saying he should ignore the coalition partners or the Gambian people, because democracy belongs to the people. But honesty and gratitude matter in leadership. A simple acknowledgment that “UDP gave me the platform and I appreciate them for it” would show humility and respect for the truth. Politics should not make people forget those who helped build their path, anyway good luck.
