The red flag I see in pitches now that didn't exist a year ago. AI made it impossible to hide. I've invested in 80+ companies. I've sat through thousands of pitches. And in the last twelve months something changed that I can't unsee. Founders show up with decks that look incredible. The copy is sharp. The market sizing is clean. The competitive landscape is thorough. Every slide is polished in a way that decks five years ago never were. Then I ask one question off the deck. And the whole thing falls apart. Not because they don't know their business. Because they didn't write their deck. AI did. And they never went back and made it theirs. Here's the red flag. The founder who can't talk about their own business with the same depth their deck claims to have. The slide says
The slide says "we have a defensible moat in three categories." I ask which category is the weakest. Long pause. They don't know. Because they didn't choose those three categories. AI did. The deck is doing work the founder hasn't done. This is the thing AI made impossible to hide. The gap between polish and conviction. A year ago a rough deck from a founder who knew their numbers cold beat a polished deck every time. Now every deck is polished. So the only thing that actually differentiates a founder is whether they can defend what's on the page when the page isn't in front of them. I'm not anti-AI in pitching. I use AI in everything I build. I built 5 SENS with AI in the room. The founders pulling ahead right now are using AI to think harder, not to outsource the thinking. Here's the test before your next pitch. Close your deck. Have someone ask you about your weakest slide. If you can talk about it for 90 seconds with specifics, you're ready. If you start reaching for what the deck said, you're not. Go back to your business. Not your deck. The founders who win this next chapter aren't the ones with the prettiest decks. They're the ones whose pitch sounds the same with the deck open or closed. Save this before your next pitch. #investor #venturecapital #pitchdeck #ai
