One of the most fun skills, to me, that you can develop through yoga is floating to the top of the mat. Whether that’s landing with your legs straight, floating into a yogi squat or even finding your way into crow. I’m not there yet, and I don’t specifically train for it, but I enjoy having a go now and then when I’m flowing. Before you even think about floating, it starts with getting comfortable stepping to the top of the mat. Then you progress to jumping, learning to land lightly and eventually working towards floating. That means getting your shoulders directly over your wrists, keeping your legs as straight as possible as you bring them through, and controlling the descent so you land as lightly as possible. There’s actually a lot going on here. It requires strength, coordination and control, particularly through the shoulders, core and hip flexors. That compression strength and the ability to control the movement as you lower your legs are a big part of it. I love this skill because it can look deceptively simple, but there’s so much involved. It takes time to develop all the different elements, and even once you start getting some air, some days you’ll have it and other days you won’t! But that’s part of the fun. Keep playing around with it, keep practising and gradually build towards it. And when you finally start catching that air and finding some control, it’s an amazing feeling. I’ve seen some incredible yoga teachers do this with such strength, control and effortless ease. It’s amazing to watch. #yogaflow #vinyasa #vinyasayoga #floatingyoganidra #yogaskills
