This fanfic is truly special !!! I think the plot point of reading a story within a story is so unique 🥹 Alexandra Emerson is such a talented writer, and I think she managed to create one of the most realistic depictions of an adult relationship between Draco and Hermione. Something that really stood out to me was Draco. He’s still struggling after the war. He’s clearly depressed, and he’s dealing with a lot of self-hatred, loneliness, guilt and shame. Things he’s never had the ability, the strength, or even the willingness to truly work through after the war. Hermione, too, isn’t perfect. Draco puts her on a pedestal from the very beginning of their relationship, which creates a power imbalance between them. He’s always desperate for her, always the one reaching for her and constantly terrified of losing her. It makes their relationship toxic at times. And damn Hermione is so mean at times. She knows how to hurt him, and she does 😭 But I love how realistic it feels. For someone struggling with depression and such a profound lack of self-worth, that dynamic makes sense. And this is probably what a relationship between Draco and Hermione would actually look like, given everything they’ve been through. More importantly, this fic makes it clear that love itself isn’t a cure. Draco finally getting to be with Hermiome doesn’t “cure” him. It doesn’t erase his insecurities, inability to communicate healthily, nor his depression. Love alone isn’t enough. People have to make a decision, they have to choose each other, choose their relationship, and choose to put in the work. This lofty idea that love can fix everything and heal all wounds is beautiful in theory, but that’s just not how real life works. Relationships require effort. Also this version of Draco might be one of my favorites !!! because he’s so deeply flawed and so profoundly human 🥺 The depiction of his depression felt real. It mirrored my own experience with it, which made me feel really attached to him, and gave me a real sense of kinship with him. know where he is because I’ve been there. ‼️‼️ Spoilers ahead ‼️‼️ One of my favorite aspects of the ending is that Draco isn’t miraculously cured. His depression doesn’t magically disappear, it’s still there and it’s something he has to live with and manage. That’s the reality of depression. You can get better with therapy, medication, and the right support system, but it’s still something you’ll have to contend with, maybe for the rest of your life. And as terrifying as that sounds, there’s also something weirdly comforting about it, because you know you can overcome it again. No matter what, this too shall pass. I got really attached to this fic, and really poured my heart out in this caption 😅 I didn’t even realize how much I wrote. If you’ve actually made it this far, leave a comment so I know that I’m not speaking into the void 🥺🫶 Ac: Forever smile | ole_lukoe | COCOTAMARINDO #hermionegranger #dracomalfoy #dramionerecs #themanuscript #ao3
