It’s kinda the same as guys who rest their foot on the clutch pedal, farmers do that a lot with tractors, just wears the clutch out prematurely

I’ve always kept my hand on the shifter… but I’ve also always been aware of this, and can feel the forks engaging. I just keep it centered and haven’t had any issues in ~30y of driving.

I had a 2011 stickshift Jetta that went over 170k miles on its original clutch until I got a new car, and I'm still incredibly proud of that fact.

as a long time mechanic I have to say this is only partially true. I feel its important to specify the pressure on the gear shifter itself. Simply sitting your hand lightly on tje gear shifter but not keeping full wait on it is fine. Honestly you can feel it when it comes in contact but you have to be aware, just dont slap your hand on the shifter like a load your hauling across country. Sit your hand there like youve done for years, be smart, and if it feels weird then lighten your hand on the shifter. No disrespect intended btw, love your videos and I can tell you definitely know your stuff, but honestly if people are struggling with problems like this, maybe they need an automatic. lol Thats where my hand always sits and will always sit on a manual and oftentimes in an auto without thinking about it. Never had an issue, but never just laid the full weight of my hand like a dead fish on the gear shifter either. There's a subtlety here not being addressed between good and bad manual drivers lol.
