I don’t get why people don’t understand what is annoying about this. Asking “do you need help” is fine - it’s the tone of “do you know what you’re doing” that is rude.

There’s a bunch of people saying they’d appreciate the help/they’d just let them do it and I don’t have the energy to explain why that’s an odd thing to say but if someone stops to help you or you ask someone for help in regard to your car, PLEASE make sure the person is qualified and knows what they are doing. Please do not blindly trust that any stranger offering help is actually capable of doing it correctly. It doesn’t have to be a professional mechanic. Many people work on their cars and have spent time learning how to do it safely and they would be more than happy to help you.
