Kal Bhairav is a fierce form of Shiva, associated with time, destruction of ego, and protection of sacred space. This particular statue is believed to be very old, possibly from the Licchavi period, and later became an important part of public life during the Malla kings. It was not just worshipped but also used as a place of justice. In the past, people accused of crimes were brought in front of this very image and asked to speak the truth. It was believed that anyone who lied before Kal Bhairav would suffer immediate divine punishment, even death. Because of this belief, people feared him deeply, and his presence became a symbol of absolute truth where nothing could be hidden. What makes this statue especially interesting is its expression. Unlike many other forms of Bhairav that look extremely fierce and terrifying, this one appears almost calm, with a slight curve in the lips that people often describe as a smile. This is not a joyful or kind smile. Devotees understand it as a knowing expression, as if he already sees through every lie and every intention. It gives a feeling that judgment is already made before a person even speaks. That is why many say this is not a smiling Bhairav but a Bhairav who knows everything. His open placement in the middle of the square also adds to this meaning. He is not hidden inside a temple but stands in public view, reminding everyone that truth is always exposed and nothing escapes time. Kal Bhairav is also worshipped as Kshetrapal, the guardian of the land, and in Kathmandu he is believed to protect the entire city. People come to him not only out of fear but also for protection, strength, and removal of negative energies. His fierce nature is not against devotees but against falsehood, ego, and injustice.
