@professorcasey: Replying to @Teresa The Luddites were not anti technology, they were anti the systems of power around that technology. And the same is true of many AI critics. So many of the graduates booing a commencement speaker talking about AI knew more rather than less about AI and how it’s reconfiguring power to benefit Eric Schmidt more than them. Also check out Blood in the Machine by Brian Merchant. :)
the great podcast 'stuff you should know' had a wonderful episode on the luddites.

Imagine making ourselves reliant on oil, with all the data showing that as soon as mass adoption is done the price of gas will be $50 a gallon. It is madness.

The fractional CMO at my company described himself as a luddite, which had me worried, but he brought up a good point about using company AI accounts. How he thinks is his own personal trademark, and he prefers to retain ownership over that rather than train company-owned AI to absorb his thinking (and potentially replace him)

I'm an older person going to college, and students are not ok with AI. I've seen various issues with 100% original work being accused of having been 93% AI created and it is terrifying. That's what I'm hearing in that boo.

Eric Schmidt (who appeared in one of your backdrops) has also been notoriously callous for over 30 years about the inevitable effects of the technologies he personally happened to foster and how everyone should just get over it.

I find it interesting how we're all taught a particular narrative about the Luddites. It's almost like the some of those in power don't want us to know what it was really about 🤔

Ha. The very video before this one on my FYP was Schmidt getting booed. I wanted to grab him by his lapels through my phone and say “I’m not afraid of AI. I just think large languages models suck and I want us to move on from treating them like super-geniuses instead of the synthetic text extrusion machines they are.”

Alternatively: They were a relic of the medieval guild system that hated the fact that clothing was being produced outside of their master & apprentice cartels
