@zwhitehistory: Replying to @aimanhakimazahari why do battles happen? Are there agreements in warfare about when you will fight a battle? Discussing the strategy of the Napoleonic Wars.
At the battle of Waterloo how did napoleon command so many men, I don’t know the number but I think it was something about 100 thousand?

It's all about opportunity and seizing the advantage. Some battles were prepared, like Waterloo, some weren't. Sometimes, the two armies found each other with scouts and manoeuvred until one side was either forced in battle, or retreat

I think part of why that misconception exists is because of how in many historic novels (war and peace for example) they use expressions like "accepting battle" or "declining battle" or whatever the phrase is.

Anyone dismissing a defensive victory has their head up their fourth point of contact and has likely never seen combat.

Would there have been battles where two armies walk right past each other?

Excellent points. People also generally don’t understand how few viable routes an army generally has available to get where it’s going. Armies need to follow roads. They can’t just march into the wilderness.

Caesar was a master of choosing a place to battle, won most of his battles before they even stared through positioning and skirmishing

Really enjoying your content. Just as a matter of interest, have you watched Game of Thrones and if so what did you think of the portrayal of The Battle of the Bastards or the Battle for Winterfell, where Stannis Baratheon was defeated?

As a professional on Asian history, I find it so strange how similar battle and tactics are. The choices on when to start battles and basic concepts for combat can be seen across the world, but equally as interesting is how those battle strategies change so drastically once they get going in different places

The battles between the English and the Scots were often a matter of geography-Stirling Bridge, Bannockburn etc. However, some of the early battles had to be by some form of pre arrangement given the relatively small populations and vast geographical areas.
