“Why is my baby so grunty and noisy in their sleep? Is something wrong?” One of the first things new parents often notice once they bring their newborn baby home is just how noisy these tiny humans are when they're sleeping. Many wonder if their baby is blocked up or uncomfortable in some way. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘆 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽: 〰️ They are more prone to stuffy noses, sneezing, snorting and rattling sounds because of their narrow nasal passages and developing respiratory systems. 〰️ Their breathing patterns are irregular - sometimes it may sound like they're breathing fast or slow. 〰️ Their digestive system is still developing - they may be gassy or working on a poop which may cause grunting etc. 〰️ Gastroesophageal Reflux - its common for our babies to have a bit of 'spit up' so you may notice some grunting or gurgling. 〰️ Babies sleep patterns are different to ours - they have no circadian rhythm and have frequent periods of light sleep. You may notice their eyes fluttering, little smiles in the corners of their mouths, twitches and sucking motions - almost as if they're dreaming about feeding! (maybe they are - who knows!) 〰️ Hunger cues - sometimes when our babies enter a lighter part of their sleep cycle, they may begin stirring and displaying hunger cues such as lip smacking, sucking on their hands or rooting. Parents often become concerned when they hear these noises - generally these are normal, as long as baby is feeding and sleeping well overall, generally happy and gaining weight. But if you are concerned, or needing some reassurance, then it's important to get your baby checked out at the Dr. A few things that would require swift medical attention: ➖ Baby's nostrils are flaring ➖ Baby is having difficulty breathing ➖ Discolouration on face/lips ➖ Rash, fever, persistent coughing ➖ Skin is pulling in around the bones on their chest/collar bone Is your baby a noisy sleeper?
